It's time to put 2020 behind us and dive into 20201! I know, I know... we can't let all of 2020 disappear quite yet - but we can lay the foundation for a better 2021 when it comes to our everyday health and wellness. Let’s dig into weight loss, as that is always the #1 New Years’ Resolution and hot topic of January!
Weight loss. Lose weight. Lean out. Get trimmer. Get fit.
These are the phrases we tend to use when we need to whittle the middle, drop some poundage and lose the flab. I feel like this year I am seeing a new type of weight gain. Its pandemic weight gain. It is weight gain caused by a combination of sedentary lifestyles, chronic stress, loneliness, irregular eating habits, isolation, sleeplessness, overeating, excessive screen time, depression, grief and baking. (I am sure you can add more to this list.) I also have a theory that when you go days and weeks at a time living in sweatpants without putting on real clothes, you don’t get the valuable feedback from your jeans that your weight is creeping up.
Ava and I get it. We are right there with you, and we can help.
Weight management, the Nu Way.
Losing weight isn’t always as straightforward as “move more and eat less”. I can think of dozens of reasons why that might not work for someone. And sometimes, in order to some folks lose weight they need to eat more and move less! I am not kidding! Ava and I feel strongly that each one of our patients is unique, and that dietary needs and nutrition goals should be tailored to your specific medical history, lifestyle and health requirements. We don’t just tell you how many calories you should eat and what foods you should avoid. Instead, we use our knowledge and experience to give you targeted strategies meant to address the unique challenges you face. From teaching you about your specific nutritional needs to offering suggestions for lifestyle changes, we create a plan that’ll help you lose weight effectively and healthily. This is the foundation of our weight management approach.
You’ll receive the education and resources you need to succeed.
Simply being told what to do isn’t the most effective approach to weight management. When it comes to losing unwanted weight and keeping it off, consistency is key and knowledge is power. That’s why we include ongoing nutrition education and access to valuable resources as part of our weight loss support and nutritional counseling sessions. We’ll also help you understand the science behind our recommendations, so you know why each intervention we implement with you will help you accomplish your goals. Think about it this way: If you know why we are making a specific recommendation for you and how it will help you, specifically, it becomes much easier to stick to the plan!
Before I wrap this up, I want to leave you with a few things to get you thinking about what you want to accomplish for your health and wellness in 2021.
1. Food is fuel and so much more. What you eat can be affecting your cognitive health, emotional health and stress levels in a major way – for better or for worse! Nutrition education gives you the facts so you know what you need to fuel your body with and why.
2. When your body is nourished well, it functions better. For starters, you can treat or reverse some medical conditions with diet alone. A healthy diet will help you to think more clearly, have sharper reflexes, better balance, less anxiety, better sleep and steadier emotions. Nutrition counseling highlights the areas that you are succeeding in as well as those areas that need work.
3. Cravings are a sign that something is out of whack. Cravings are your body’s way of crying out for something. It is a signal that something is off balance. We can help you figure out what that is so the cravings stop.
